Electronic Patient Record
Overview
What is EPR?
EPR is designed to allow fast and easy on-line access to patient records in all areas across the Hopkins continuum of care, thus enhancing patient care. Through EPR, the user can view patient data integrated from multiple sources, including Lab Results, Radiology Reports, ECG Reports, EEG Reports, OB Sonogram Reports, Discharge Summaries, Operative Notes, etc.
There are several versions of the Electronic Patient Record (EPR):

Read Only, Web-based application written in Cold Fusion. Web EPR will run on Netscape 6 or higher; or Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher.

EPR Functionality
All versions of EPR have similar functionality;
- EPR client application is a Windows application which provides access to all Patient data. Additionally, EPR allows priviledged users Write access, as well as Read access, to certain data in patients records.
- Priviledged users may:
- Create, Edit and Sign patient notes
- Add items to a patient's Problems, Allergies, or Medications Lists
- Update a patient's Health Maintenance Record
- Web EPR has View-Only access to patients records.
- EPR client and Web EPR have the added ability to access the patient's Problems, Allergies, and Medications lists.
- EPR client users can access the Health Maintenance Records data. Health Maintenance cannot be accessed from Web EPR.

Technical Specs
- The EPR Client is written in Visual Basic 6
- Web EPR is written in Cold Fusion.
- Data is stored in DB2 databases on the mainframe and Sybase databases on Windows
NT servers.
- Remote Stored Procedures (RSP) are used to communicate with databases.
- TCP/IP network protocol is used to communicate between client and server.

Future Plans
- Elimination of Direct Connect Gateway via the use of WebSphere. This should
improve the reliability of EPR.
- CCOW enablement, allowing EPR to share patient and user context with other
CCOW-enabled applications like POE.
- Ability to fax EPR documents from within EPR.
